Kennesaw State's sports teams compete in the American Athletics Conference, with the football team being an associate member of the Big South Conference. The five teams of the Nordstaffel compete against each other six times, while the four teams of the Südstaffel compete in six matches each. This is the environment for the North Alabama Athletic teams that support the Owls, who are scheduled for six home games against the University of Alabama at Huntsville, Auburn University, Alabama State University and Alabama A & M. There are also four home games against Georgia Tech and two away games at Georgia State, with all of their scheduled games going to the Georgia Southeastern Conference and the South Alabama Athletic Association (SAC).
In 1995, the Lady Owls jumped from the NAIA to the American Athletics Conference (AAC), where they first competed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NAC). They have also participated in three NCAA Division II conferences and the North American Intercollegiate Athletics Association and will compete in a sport sponsored by the Atlantic Sun Conference for the first time since 2013. While all existing Kennesaw State varieties of sports, football, basketball, volleyball and athletics, will compete for the A-Sun championships, they will not be members of the conference.
The Owls made it back to the Atlantic Sun Championship in the 2013 season, but lost to East Tennessee State University 7-2 and were again stuck in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional. In 2014, they beat Columbus State to win their first NCAA Division II championship in women's volleyball and then moved on, this time with a 2-1 victory over Georgia Southern University, only to stall again in an NCAA South Atlantic Region.
In the NCAA, Kennesaw State Owls' previous game was against the NJIT Highlanders, but the game ended with a score of 55-76 and was sold out at the fast-paced mark. The NJit Highlanders won this game 2-1 thanks to a goal from Ally Fordham, who scored the equaliser on an assist from Sarah. In the first game of the day, Kenny Saw's women's football team shone with two goals in the second half and increased its lead to 1-0 against Georgia Southern University in front of 2,500 fans at a sold-out stadium.
Kennesaw State University, the University of Georgia, Georgia Southern University and Beat Bank have entered into a public-private partnership to build the Fifth Third Bank Stadium on the KSU campus.
